Escape to Saona Island. Just a short boat ride away, this heaven-on-earth getaway is a definite must-do. It’s a Caribbean oasis with shockingly white sand and transparent sky blue waters that will blow your beach hair back. If that’s not enough, it’s also a sanctuary for several species of migratory birds. There are also caves, such as Cotubama, which were named in memory of an indigenous chief of this region. Here’s a fun fact: the island was originally named “Adamanay” in the Taino language. However, during Christopher Columbus’ second voyage to the Americas in 1494, he had with him an Italian, Michele da Cuneo from Savona, Italy, and named the island “Saona” to in his honor. Who knew, right? No matter what anyone calls it, we call it paradise.
Explore Cool Cave Paintings. Inside Cueva de las Maravillas or “Cave of Wonders,” the walls are covered in paintings and engravings that were created by the Taino people, the indigenous residents of the Greater Antilles, the area in which the Dominican Republic is located. In fact, it was the Taino people who greeted Columbus when he arrived on this dreamy island. Inside this moody cave, you’ll gaze upon 10 petroglyphs (rock engravings) and 472 pictographs (paintings on the wall). Don’t miss the Water Mirror Gallery, an artificial lake that reflects the top of the cave like a mirror, or The Great Panel, a painting that depicts a funeral ritual. It’s trippy cool and something you’ve gotta see.
Cruise Down the Rio Chavon. Just east of La Romana is a mighty gorge called the Chavon River. As you sail down this majestic river, you’ll get big eyefuls of a lush tropical jungle filled with wildlife, but don’t worry, there aren’t any crocodiles or piranhas. However, you might see the Freshwater Turtle, the Fish Hawk, the Turkey Vulture and many other water birds. While you’re taking in all these exotic critters, you can enjoy lunch that includes options like a conch salad and fresh seafood or chicken, and best of all, seemingly unlimited drinks (beer, wine, bottled water, etc.) And, there’s a restroom on board. Also, it’s interesting to note is that the blockbusters Apocalypse Now, Rambo 3 and Anaconda were filmed here. But once you get a look at Rio Chavon, you’ll instantly understand.
Ride Dune Buggies Through Sugar Cane Fields. If you’re craving the thrill of racing through the countryside, then Crazy Wheels in Bayahibe is where to head. You can sail through sugar cane fields and dirt roads with abandon and forget your worries. Along the way, you’ll pass through a small village called Bateyes, where you’ll learn all about sugar cane and even get to taste some of this sweet nectar. Drinks and fresh fruit will also be provided on this adventure and you’ll even come upon Rio Chavon, where you can take a dip. You only live once, Beach Lovers.
Sample Hand-Rolled Cigars. Believe it or not, cigars are one of the Dominican Republic’s most important imports. That’s why, if you’re into them, you need to stop by La Tabacalera de Garcia Cigar Factory. You’ll tour the grounds and see the process of making these cigars, start to finish. Maybe even get to sample a smoke or two.

Play at Playa Minitas. This private sanctuary of beachy bliss is located at Casa de Campo, one of the most epic golf courses on the island. Whether you want to soak up the sun or dive into watersports like snorkeling, kayaking or paddle boating, you’ll be one happy beacher.
Take the Plunge with a Submarine Ride. This is one of the best La Romana excursions around, especially when you book with Kenavo Tropical. In addition to gazing at all the colorful fish and gorgeous coral, you can also snorkel, scuba dive or swim. Beverages are included: water, juice, sodas and of course, rum, plus light snacks.
