Must-eats in Antigua

by Rachel Tellez April 23, 2019
written by Rachel Tellez

It’s no surprise that an island as breathtaking as Antigua is one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean. The tropical island boasts a unique culture, picturesque beaches, friendly locals, gorgeous views and some of the most delicious Caribbean cuisine. These must-eats in Antigua are among the best on the island and you won’t want to pass them up!

Cades Bay Agricultural Station

Calling all pineapple lovers: ever heard of Antigua Black Pineapple (or Antigua Black, for short)? Well, it’s not just any pineapple. It’s the sweetest pineapple in the world. At first glance, they may look average…maybe even not quite ripe. But trust us, you’ll want to try them. And nothing says Antigua island life more than picking some up from Cades Bay Agricultural Station on Old Road. Not only will you get a sweet treat, but you’ll also get a quick history on the famous Antigua Blacks and first-hand experience on the cultivation process.

Catherine’s Cafe Plage

Nestled along the soft, white sand of Pigeon’s Bay is the coziest spot of them all: Catherine’s Cafe. The cafe has been a local and tourist favorite for three decades, serving French-inspired cuisines such as tuna escabeche, lobster salad, morel & truffle risotto, créme brûlée, house-made sorbets and much, much more. They also have a pretty impressive wine list that visitors can’t get enough of! It’s even nominated for USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice for Best Caribbean Beach Bar 2019–we told you it’s just that good!

Papa Zouk

No visit to Antigua is complete without spending an evening at this classic Caribbean rum shop, a local and visitor favorite. The quaint restaurant, owned by German film producer Bert Kirchner, has even been nicknamed “the greatest rum bar in the region” by dozens of visitors because of its extensive collection of rums. When you visit, you have to try Kirchner’s rum creation, “Fire Rum,” and Chef Karen’s fish.

Dennis Cocktail Bar & Restaurant

Almost always recommended by locals, Dennis’ restaurant is one of the best must-eats in Antigua! Located on the gorgeous Ffryes Beach, sunset views are some of the best on the island. The menu offers a variety of delicious Caribbean cuisine ranging from conch or goat curry to fish or beef burgers. This beach spot is perfect for lunch or dinner with a view!

Jacqui O’s Beach House

This beachside gem is definitely one of our favorite must-eats in Antigua! Situated along Crab Hill Beach, this rustic-chic restaurant offers stunning beach views, great cocktails, a cozy atmosphere and some delicious cuisine! Using only fresh and seasonal ingredients from local farmers and fisherman, the menu is constantly changing with exciting new dishes. If you’re not renting a car, just catch Bus 22 from West Bus Station in St. John’s.

Sheer Rocks at Cocobay Resort

If you’re looking to splurge for a romantic evening in Antigua, Sheer Rocks is definitely the place to do it! Located at Cocobay Resort, this restaurant offers stunning, panoramic ocean views from its open-air patio seating. Enjoy long, relaxing cliffside lunches over the turquoise water or romantic dinners as the sun goes down. Their menu offers a variety of Mediterranean-inspired entrees for dinner and an extensive tapas-style lunch menu. Sheer Rocks is definitely one of those dining experiences you don’t want to miss out on!
